Pin above or Pin below Bowling Ball Drilling Layouts Explained
This is a bowling tips article on bowling ball drilling layouts and the differences between pin above and pin below drillings. This may be a pretty advanced bowling tip for your beginning bowlers but they may learn something as well.
Again we must understand basic bowling ball motion and the three stages that a bowling ball goes through as it is roll down a bowling lane.
Basic bowling ball motion
The basic motion of a bowling ball his slide, transition to hook and then roll. In other words slide, hook, and roll. These are called transitions.
So what we are trying to do with bowling ball layouts is adjust one of these three transitions. Your ball driller can adjust these transitions to a degree with your bowling balls drilling layout. These drilling layouts are not magic they just give you what is known as an earlier or later response down a bowling lane.
This change in response of a bowling ball can determine and make up for the lack of the certain capabilities of the bowler, and can be matched to the bowling lane conditions for better overall performance.
Pin above & below bowling ball drilling layouts explained
The pin above drilling layout.
The pin above drilling layout will have a longer slide zone with a shorter transition and hook zone. This is known as a late response bowling ball. We would want to use this type of bowling ball when you need a longer slide and a little bit more back end.
The pin below drilling layout
The pin below drilling layout will have a smoother and more controlled response on the bowling lane. In addition, this layout will transition earlier and slower as it is roll down a bowling lane. This type of layout is often used when you need a more controlled bowling ball motion. This is what they call a slow response drilling layout.
